Recipe: Burger with Honey-Caramelized Onions

dp spotlight sf Recipe: Burger with Honey-Caramelized Onions

PREP TIME: 10 mins
COOK TIME: 10 mins

These are not your average burgers. They're the no-fuss, minimal-ingredient burgers that will make you think you're dining out. This recipe allows these simple, flavourful ingredients to shine – no eggs or breadcrumbs in these patties…just 100% grass-fed ground beef, salt, and some fresh ground pepper.

For an easy & delicious sidekick to these burgers, you can never go wrong with roasted sweet potato fries and a simple salad.

We often find great ingredients make prep so much easier - just let them do all the work!

INGREDIENTS:

Servings: 4

1 lb of 100% grass-fed ground beef
2 tsp of kosher salt
1 tsp of fresh ground pepper
1 tbsp of butter (preferrably, 100% grass-fed!)
1 medium size white onion, cut into strips
1 tbsp of honey
1 tbsp of cooking oil (avocado oil works well)
4 hamburger buns (toasting optional)
4 thick slices of aged cheddar cheese (optional)
Other suggested condiments include Dijon mustard and sauerkraut

PREPARATION:

STEP 1
Take the ground beef out of the fridge and let come to room temperature for 30 minutes.

STEP 2
In a large mixing bowl, season the ground beef all over with the salt and pepper.  Mix well using your hands.

STEP 3
Form four patties with the ground beef that are about 3-4 inches wide and about 1 inch thick. Once patties are formed, use your thumb to make a small indent in the middle of the patties. The indentation helps the patty hold an even shape (rather than swell in the middle) as it shrinks during cooking.

STEP 4
Set a small frying pan to medium heat, and add the butter.  Once the butter begins to foam, add the honey and mix.  Add the onions and sauté in the honey-butter mixture for about 10 minutes, or until nicely browned.

STEP 5
While the onions are cooking, set a large heavy skillet (cast iron works well) on the stove on medium-to-high heat, and add the oil.

STEP 6
Once oil is hot, add patties to skillet and cook on each side for 2-3 minutes.  If you are making a cheeseburger, add the cheese once you flip the patties.

STEP 7
Remove patties from skillet and place in sliced burger buns.  Allow cooked patties to rest for a few minutes before eating – this can be done while you’re adding condiments or garnishes.
